Can you drink a mile?

Paying homage to old-school NYC is great, and frankly necessary, as old-school NYC will straight stab you if you don't pay up, mang. Hoping to bring back the old-time vibe of the Bowery via mugs of beer instead of muggings: One Mile House.

From a team that knows its way around an Irish bar (Amity Hall, Stout...Bowery Ballroom?), this tavern-of-yore's tile floors, globular lights, and photos of early 1900s neighborhood scenes set the mood in its double-barreled bar area, while an English muffin of a back area (it's got nooks!) is highlighted by an old potbelly stove. Whimsical, immigrantfluenced bar grub includes sandos like the NY Steakhouse (skirt topped w/ creamed spinach & fries), but the focus is on shareable plates of crispy Buffalo frog legs, bacon-cheddar matzo balls, oyster sliders, and pork Stilton pie with bachelor beans, also what you can call the beans stuffed in all of your furniture, you loveless ponce. The serious beer program will occasionally sport one-off brews, but always feature 30 lines loaded with the likes of River Horse Lager, Nectar's Hemp Ale, Chimay Grand Reserve, and seasonals such as current offering Delirium Noel, Founders Breakfast Stout, and Troegs Mad Elf, which in the holiday spirit will get you suitably Blitzened.

Going off-tap can mean large-format bottles (Hopping Frog's B.O.R.I.S. the Crusher) or beertails ("My Fickle Friend" = Pimm's, Dewar's, lemon juice, and Prohibition Ale foam), but straight spirits are on hand as well, including the rye/ Benedictine/ absinthe "Goodnight, Killer", so, um...maybe they're going for that old-time stabbing thing after all.
